ليه المصري؟Why Egyptian

If you only ever learn one Arabic, learn this one.

Arabic is not one language in practice — every country speaks its own. Eighty years of Egyptian films, songs and TV went into every Arab home, so an Egyptian speaker is understood almost anywhere. A Moroccan or Iraqi speaker often is not.

And Standard Arabic? That is the language of newspapers and speeches. Nobody chats in it. Egyptian is the language of the café, the taxi and the family table — so people answer you back.

I'm Ali — born and raised in Egypt, and a native teacher of the dialect. I've written three books on learning Arabic; The Most Essential Egyptian Arabic Book has sold over 5,000 copies in print and digital. Six years of teaching, more than 3,000 hours of lessons, and today Speak Arabi runs over 1,000 teaching hours every month. Every one of those hours was with non-native speakers — so I know where people get stuck. Which sounds are hard. Which words the textbooks give you that no Egyptian has ever said out loud. These courses are built around that, and they teach the Arabic people actually speak, not the Arabic of news broadcasts.

  • Author of Egyptian Arabic Rules Decoded
  • Author of The Most Essential Egyptian Arabic
